AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)
The short answer
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines — AI assistants and search features that respond with a direct answer — can find, extract and cite it.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question, the response is often synthesised from a few sources. AEO aims to make your content one of them.
What helps
- A direct, self-contained answer in the first two to four sentences
- Question-phrased headings that match how people ask
- One idea per paragraph
- Claims supported by numbers, examples and sources
- Consistent brand and entity information across the web
- Content visible in server-rendered HTML
- Accurate structured data
What doesn't
- Keyword stuffing
- Artificially chopping content into tiny fragments
- Writing in odd "AI-friendly" phrasing
- Treating special AI files as ranking levers
Where AEO shows up
- Featured snippets and "People also ask" in Google
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
- Voice assistants
- Chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot
Google states that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features (Google Search Central). See AEO and GEO services and our AEO guide.
Google's stance on AEO
Google's July 2026 guide frames AEO for its AI features as ordinary SEO: be indexed and snippet-eligible, publish helpful non-commodity content, give a good page experience — and measure results in Search Console's generative AI performance report (source).
AEO in practice
A clinic's page on "root canal cost" starts with a clear answer — a cost range, what affects it, and when it's needed — followed by details, doctor credentials and FAQs. The page becomes easier for search features and assistants to quote accurately.
Practical AEO steps
- Answer the main question in the first lines
- Use clear headings and tables for comparisons
- Cite sources and keep facts current
- Keep business information consistent across the web
AEO for Indian brands
Indian users increasingly ask questions in Hinglish and regional languages, and through voice. Clear answers to the questions customers actually ask — prices, eligibility, comparisons, local availability — help brands appear in Google's AI features and assistants.
Common AEO mistakes
- Writing vague introductions before the answer
- Inconsistent business information across the web
- Chasing tricks instead of genuinely useful content
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. The same expertise and technical foundations matter; AEO adds emphasis on extractable structure and evidence.
How is AEO measured?
By tracking brand citations for defined buyer questions across AI engines, AI-referred traffic and branded search.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap. AEO focuses on being the extracted answer; GEO focuses on being cited or recommended in generated answers. See GEO.
Do we need new content for AEO?
Mostly no. Improve existing pages with direct answers, structure and sources, then fill gaps.
Do we need special code for AEO?
No — Google says structured data isn't required for AI features, though it can help search engines understand pages.
Does AEO need a separate team?
Usually not — it's part of SEO and content work.
How do we measure AEO?
Through Search Console, analytics referrals from AI tools and regular checks of answers for priority questions.
