Consumer app growth measured in retained users
The short answer
India is one of the world's largest app markets and one of the least forgiving. Users install freely and uninstall just as freely — often over storage space or data use. A consumer app's growth depends less on how cheaply it buys installs than on how quickly new users find value and come back.
PMG runs consumer app growth across acquisition, store optimisation, activation and retention, measured on retained and valuable users.
The consumer app growth loop
- Store listing — ASO that converts browsers into installs.
- Acquisition — Google, Meta, Apple Search Ads and vernacular platforms, optimised toward activation.
- Activation — onboarding that gets users to value in the first session.
- Retention — push, in-app messaging, WhatsApp and email, based on behaviour.
- Referral — mechanisms that turn happy users into acquisition.
India-specific realities
- Android-first volume, with iOS users often worth more
- Regional languages — onboarding and creative in users' languages improves activation beyond metros
- App size and data use matter for uninstall rates
- Payment flows — UPI and wallet integration reduce friction
- Festival and cricket seasons shift attention and ad costs
Categories we don't market
We don't market real-money online games, whose promotion India's 2025 online gaming law prohibits, or other products that can't be advertised legally and responsibly.
What to measure beyond installs
- Cost per activated user by channel and platform
- D1, D7 and D30 retention by acquisition cohort
- Revenue per user where the app monetises
- Organic install share over time
- Uninstall rate within the first week
- Store rating trend
The first 90 days
- Weeks 1–2 — MMP and event audit, activation event agreed, store listing benchmarked.
- Weeks 3–4 — ASO improvements to screenshots and metadata; campaigns restructured toward activation events where volume allows.
- Month 2 — onboarding and push experiments with the product team; regional-language creative tests.
- Month 3 — scale channels whose cohorts retain; add Apple Search Ads or vernacular platforms if cohorts justify it.
What should consumer apps optimise for?
| Goal | Campaign event | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Early launch | Install | Only while event volume is too low for anything else |
| Activation | Registration, onboarding complete | As soon as volume allows |
| Monetisation | First purchase, subscription, deposit | Once daily event volume supports it |
| Value | Purchase value (value-based bidding) | Mature apps with reliable revenue events |
Regulatory limits for app categories in India
- Real-money gaming. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, passed in August 2025, prohibits offering and advertising online real-money games, with penalties for advertising them (overview). E-sports and social games are treated differently. We don't market real-money gaming.
- Lending and financial apps. RBI's digital lending rules and Google's financial services verification in India apply; see fintech.
- Health apps. Claims and data handling need extra care; platform health policies apply.
- All apps. India's DPDP framework governs personal data, with obligations phasing in through May 2027.
App marketing metrics by stage
| Stage | Metrics |
|---|---|
| Store | Impressions, store conversion rate, ratings |
| Acquisition | CPI, cost per registration, cost per first transaction |
| Activation | Activation rate, time to first value |
| Retention | D1, D7, D30 retention, churn |
| Revenue | ARPU, LTV by cohort and source, payback period |
Reaching India beyond the metros
India's internet audience reached about 958 million active users in 2025, with rural users making up 57% and growing faster than urban users (IAMAI–Kantar via Business Standard). For consumer apps, that means:
- Regional-language store listings, onboarding and ad creative
- Lighter app sizes and data-conscious experiences
- Vernacular platforms and short video for reach — see ShareChat and Moj
- Value messaging and trust signals
App marketing by category
| Category | Key event to optimise |
|---|---|
| Commerce and delivery | First order |
| Social and content | Day-7 retention |
| Health and fitness | Subscription start |
| Travel | First booking |
| Productivity | Activation of core feature |
A worked example
A content app had strong installs and poor retention. We optimised campaigns for users who engaged three days in the first week, improved onboarding with the product team and used push and email re-engagement. Retained users per rupee rose.

Frequently asked questions
What should consumer apps optimise campaigns for?
The activation event most strongly linked to retention — not installs.
Do vernacular platforms work for app installs?
For apps targeting audiences beyond the metros, often yes. Test ShareChat, Moj and regional YouTube against your core channels.
How do we reduce uninstalls?
Faster activation, smaller app size, respectful notifications and genuine value in the first session.
How much does it cost to acquire an app user in India?
Install costs are among the lowest globally for broad categories, but the relevant number is the cost per active or paying user. Calculate it from your activation and retention rates, not from CPI alone.
Is ASO worth it if we run paid campaigns?
Yes. Better store pages raise conversion for paid and organic traffic alike, lowering the effective cost of every campaign. See app store optimisation.
How do we improve D7 retention?
Shorten time to first value, personalise onboarding, send timely and relevant notifications, and fix the reasons early users leave — found in reviews, surveys and analytics.
Do influencer campaigns work for apps?
They can, especially for categories that benefit from demonstration. Track installs and downstream events by creator link or code, and compare retention with paid channels.
What is a good day-1 retention rate?
It varies by category; compare against your own cohorts and category benchmarks from your measurement partner.
Should apps run web campaigns too?
Sometimes — web-to-app flows can lower costs for considered purchases.
How do we market an app in Indian regional languages?
With localised creative, store listings and onboarding for each language.
How long does Consumer Apps marketing take to show results?
Tracking fixes and search campaigns often show improvement within two to four weeks; prospecting on Meta or YouTube usually needs three to six weeks of creative testing; SEO compounds over three to nine months. We agree leading indicators up front so progress is visible early.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
