Google Business Profile: your cheapest acquisition channel
The short answer
For a local business, a fully optimised Google Business Profile usually generates more enquiries than the website does — and it costs nothing but attention. Calls, direction requests and messages come directly from the profile, often without the searcher ever visiting your site.
Most profiles we audit are perhaps 40% complete: wrong primary category, no products or services listed, a handful of old photos, unanswered reviews and an empty Q&A section that competitors have filled with their own questions.
The optimisation checklist
- Primary category chosen precisely — the single highest-impact field
- Secondary categories added for genuine additional services
- Every applicable attribute set (accessibility, payments, amenities, service options)
- Services or products listed individually with descriptions and prices
- Business description written for humans, using natural service language
- Photos: exterior, interior, team, products, at volume and refreshed regularly
- Hours accurate, including holiday hours — wrong hours generate bad reviews
- Q&A seeded with real customer questions and answered by the business
- Booking, menu or appointment links connected where available
- Messaging enabled if you can actually respond quickly
- Posts published regularly — offers, events, updates
Reviews: the part most businesses neglect
- Ask systematically. Every satisfied customer, through a consistent process, with a direct review link.
- Never incentivise. Paid or rewarded reviews violate Google's policies and risk the profile.
- Respond to every review — positive and negative. Response rate is visible to customers and signals an active business.
- Handle negatives properly. Acknowledge, take it offline, resolve. A well-handled complaint often reads better than a generic five-star.
- Keep velocity steady. Twenty reviews in one week then nothing for a year looks manipulated.
Multi-location businesses
Each location needs its own profile, verified separately, with location-specific photos, hours and reviews. Bulk management through the API or a platform becomes worthwhile beyond roughly ten locations. Duplicate or unclaimed profiles for the same location are common and actively harmful.
How does Google rank local businesses?
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors (Google Business Profile Help):
| Factor | Meaning | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well the profile matches the search | Accurate categories, services, products, descriptions and website content |
| Distance | How far the business is from the searcher or searched location | Nothing — except having genuine locations where customers are |
| Prominence | How well known the business is | Reviews, ratings, mentions, links, local press and consistent citations |
The Google Business Profile optimisation checklist
- Primary category chosen precisely; secondary categories only where accurate
- Business name exactly as used in real life — no keyword stuffing
- Address and service areas correct; phone number matching the website
- Opening hours, holiday hours and special hours kept up to date
- Services and products listed with descriptions and prices where appropriate
- Photos of exterior, interior, team, products and work — refreshed regularly
- Booking, messaging or call options enabled where useful
- Q&A seeded with genuine common questions and answered
- Posts for offers, events and updates
- Reviews requested systematically and every review answered
Reviews: how to get more, and how to respond
- Ask at the right moment — after a positive experience, with a direct review link or QR code.
- Make it easy — WhatsApp and SMS review requests work well in India.
- Never buy, gate or fake reviews — Google's policies prohibit it, and fake reviews damage trust.
- Reply to every review — thank positive reviewers specifically; answer negative reviews calmly, factually and with a route to resolution.
- Use feedback — recurring complaints are operational problems to fix.

What does GBP optimisation cost?
A one-time optimisation project covers profile audit and fixes, categories, services, photos, Q&A and review-request setup. Ongoing management — posts, photos, review responses, reporting and citation maintenance — is a modest monthly fee per location, often part of a local SEO programme. Plus 18% GST.
Google Business Profile by business type
| Business | Key profile features | Key metric |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics and healthcare | Services, appointment links, reviews | Calls and bookings |
| Restaurants | Menus, photos, reservations | Direction requests and bookings |
| Retail stores | Products, hours, offers | Store visits |
| Service-area businesses | Service areas, quotes | Calls and messages |
| Multi-location brands | Consistent data at scale | Local rankings per location |
A worked example: a clinic chain's local visibility
A clinic chain had duplicate and unverified profiles with inconsistent names and hours. We consolidated and verified every location, set correct categories and services, added photos and appointment links, launched a review-request flow after visits and built location pages on the website. Calls and direction requests rose across locations.
How a Google Business Profile engagement with PMG runs
- Audit (week 0–1). Accounts, analytics, tracking, website, CRM flow and competitors reviewed, with a written list of what's broken, what's wasted and the three moves we'd make first.
- Plan (week 1–2). Break-even ROAS or a target cost per lead, a measurement plan and a 90-day roadmap for Google Business Profile, with owners and dates.
- Launch (week 2–4). Clean structures, verified conversion signals, the first creative sprint and landing-page fixes.
- Optimise (months 2–3). A weekly test cadence, with budget following the cheapest incremental results rather than platform-reported ones.
- Scale (month 3 onwards). New channels, geographies and retention loops, added only when the economics hold.
Every week you get a one-page scorecard, a change log, the test board and a 30-minute call with your strategist. See how we work and pricing for details.
Why teams choose PMG for Google Business Profile
- Measurement first. Unit economics and clean tracking come before any increase in spend.

- Senior hands on the account. The strategist you speak to is the person running it.
- Weekly transparency. Scorecard, change log and test board — every week.
- Short minimum terms. We keep clients with results, not contracts.

Frequently asked questions
How long does GBP optimisation take to work?
Category and completeness changes can influence map pack visibility within days to a few weeks. Review velocity builds over months.
Can we rank in areas where we have no location?
The map pack heavily weights proximity, so it's genuinely difficult. Creating fake locations violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension. Serve those areas with organic local SEO content instead.
What if we get a fake negative review?
Report it through the profile for policy violation, and respond publicly and professionally in the meantime. Removal is not guaranteed, and a measured reply often limits the damage more than removal would.
Do GBP posts affect rankings?
Their direct ranking effect is minor, but they occupy space in your profile, communicate activity and drive engagement — which is worth the small effort.
Why isn't our business showing on Google Maps?
Common reasons: the profile isn't verified, the category doesn't match searches, the address or service area is wrong, the profile was suspended, or competitors are closer and more prominent. We check each.
Can we add keywords to our business name?
No. Adding keywords that aren't part of your real business name violates Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension.
Should we use a service-area business profile?
If you serve customers at their location and don't receive them at an address — plumbers, home services, some consultants — yes. Businesses customers visit should show the address.
How do we deal with fake negative reviews?
Report reviews that violate Google's policies through the profile, respond calmly and publicly, and keep collecting genuine reviews so one outlier matters less.
Does posting on Google Business Profile help?
Posts keep the profile fresh and can improve conversion by showing offers and updates. Their direct ranking effect is unclear; their value is mainly for people viewing the profile.
How do we get more Google reviews?
Ask every satisfied customer at the right moment, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to every review. Never buy or incentivise reviews.
What if our profile gets suspended?
We review the guidelines breach, fix the issue and help with reinstatement requests.
Do Google Business Profile posts help?
They keep profiles fresh and can support conversions, though their ranking effect is limited.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
