Growth marketing across the whole customer lifecycle
The short answer
Growth marketing treats the entire customer lifecycle as one system to experiment on — not just acquisition. Often the biggest gains aren't in buying more users but in activating the ones you already have, keeping them longer, or getting them to bring friends.
PMG runs growth in two-week sprints: a prioritised experiment backlog, written hypotheses, honest reads, and focus on the one metric that best predicts your business's success.
The lifecycle as experiment areas
- Acquisition — new channels, audiences, messages and offers
- Activation — getting new users to the moment of value faster
- Retention — bringing them back through habit loops and lifecycle messaging
- Referral — turning customers into an acquisition channel
- Revenue — pricing, packaging, upsell and average order value
The sprint rhythm
- Pick the constraint — the lifecycle stage with the biggest drop-off.
- Generate ideas from data, customer research and competitor analysis.
- Score them on impact, confidence and effort.
- Run the top experiments with pre-agreed success metrics.
- Review honestly — ship, iterate or kill.
- Document everything so the team's learning compounds.
Choosing a north-star metric
- It reflects value delivered to customers
- It predicts revenue
- It's measurable weekly
- The whole team can influence it
- It's hard to game
An example growth sprint
Say a subscription app's constraint is activation: 60% of new users never complete their first key action. A two-week sprint might test a shorter onboarding (three screens instead of seven), a WhatsApp nudge sent one hour after signup to users who haven't activated, and a changed default that pre-fills the first action. Each test has a pre-agreed metric — day-one activation rate — and a minimum sample. At the end of the sprint, winners ship, losers are documented, and the next constraint is chosen from the data rather than from whoever argued loudest in the meeting.
What is the difference between growth marketing and performance marketing?
| Performance marketing | Growth marketing | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Paid acquisition against a target | The whole lifecycle: acquisition, activation, retention, referral, revenue |
| Main levers | Media, creative, bidding, landing pages | Experiments across product, messaging, pricing, onboarding, CRM and channels |
| Team | Marketing and agency | Marketing, product, data and sometimes engineering |
| Typical metric | CAC, ROAS, cost per qualified lead | North-star metric, retention, LTV, payback |
Most growing companies need both: performance marketing to acquire efficiently, growth marketing to make each customer worth more.
The growth experiment framework
- Find the constraint — the lifecycle stage with the biggest drop-off or the biggest upside.
- Write hypotheses — "If we change X for audience Y, metric Z will improve because…"
- Prioritise — impact, confidence and ease scoring.
- Run the test — the smallest version that gives a clear answer.
- Analyse honestly — including tests that failed.
- Document and scale — winners roll out; learnings go into a shared library.
Examples of growth experiments by lifecycle stage
- Acquisition — a new creator angle, a referral landing page, a comparison page for high-intent searches
- Activation — shorter sign-up, a first-order incentive tied to a specific product, an onboarding WhatsApp message
- Retention — replenishment reminders timed to usage, a loyalty tier, win-back offers by segment
- Referral — double-sided rewards, share moments after positive experiences
- Revenue — bundles, subscriptions, price-tier tests, post-purchase upsells
Growth metrics that matter
| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| North-star metric | The single measure of value customers get from you |
| Activation rate | Share of new users reaching first value |
| Retention rate by cohort | Whether customers stay or come back |
| LTV : CAC | Whether acquisition is affordable |
| Payback period | How fast cash returns |
| Experiment velocity and win rate | Whether the programme is learning |
What does a growth marketing engagement cost?
Growth programmes are usually monthly retainers covering strategy, experiment design, analysis and execution across channels, with media and development costs separate. The fee depends on how many experiment streams run in parallel and how much execution we own versus your team. Plus 18% GST.
Growth focus by company stage
| Stage | Growth question | Typical experiments |
|---|---|---|
| Pre product–market fit | Who truly needs this? | Messaging and audience tests |
| Early traction | Which channel scales? | Channel tests with small budgets |
| Growth | How do we keep CAC down at scale? | Creative, funnel and pricing tests |
| Expansion | Where's the next market? | Geography, segment and product tests |

Frequently asked questions
Is growth marketing the same as growth hacking?
The useful part is the same — rapid experimentation across the lifecycle. The "hacking" label attracted many tactics that don't survive past the first month.
How many experiments should we run?
Enough to learn steadily without overloading the team — often two to five meaningful experiments a sprint.
Do we need a product team involved?
For activation and retention experiments, yes. Growth marketing works best when marketing and product share the backlog.
Is growth marketing only for startups and apps?
No. Any business with repeat customers, a funnel and data can use the approach — D2C brands, subscription businesses, education, fintech and B2B SaaS all benefit.
How many experiments should run at once?
As many as you can run cleanly without overlapping audiences or metrics. For most teams, two to five meaningful tests a fortnight.
What if most experiments fail?
Many will. A good programme expects a minority of tests to win clearly and treats the others as learning that narrows the next hypothesis.
Do you need access to our product analytics?
Yes, ideally — tools such as GA4, Mixpanel, Amplitude or your database. Growth work depends on seeing what users do after acquisition.
How is this different from growth hacking?
Growth hacking became associated with shortcuts. Growth marketing is disciplined experimentation grounded in customer value and honest measurement.
What is a north-star metric?
The single metric that best reflects the value customers get — such as weekly active users or repeat orders — used to align growth work.
Do you work with product teams?
Yes — onboarding, activation and retention experiments often involve product changes.
How long does Growth Marketing take to show results?
Tracking fixes and search campaigns often show improvement within two to four weeks; prospecting on Meta or YouTube usually needs three to six weeks of creative testing; SEO compounds over three to nine months. We agree leading indicators up front so progress is visible early.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
