App growth measured in retained users
The short answer
App growth is three disciplines that only work together: store optimisation that converts the traffic you already get, paid acquisition that buys users who do something, and retention that makes those users worth buying. Run one without the others and you either buy churn or starve a well-built product of users.
PMG runs all three against one number: whether a cohort's lifetime value exceeds what it cost to acquire, within a payback period the business can fund.
The three levers
- ASO — store listing, keywords, screenshots and ratings. Improves conversion on both organic and paid traffic, so it multiplies everything else.
- Paid UA — Google App Campaigns, Meta AAA and Apple Search Ads, optimised toward in-app value events.
- Retention and engagement — onboarding, push, in-app messaging and CRM. This is where LTV is made or lost.
How we run app growth
- Instrument properly. MMP, in-app events with revenue, cohort reporting by source.
- Fix the store listing. A 10% conversion improvement lowers effective CPI across every channel simultaneously.
- Find the activation moment. The action that predicts retention — and then optimise acquisition toward it, not toward installs.
- Buy on value events once volume allows the networks to learn.
- Build the retention loop — onboarding sequence, push strategy, re-engagement campaigns for lapsed users.
- Report by cohort. D1, D7, D30 retention and revenue per cohort by source. Anything else hides the truth.
The Indian app market's particular shape
Android carries the volume, iOS carries much of the revenue. Regional language onboarding materially improves activation in tier-2 and tier-3 markets. Data-cost sensitivity makes app size and offline behaviour a genuine growth variable. And uninstall rates in India are high across categories, which makes the first-session experience disproportionately important.
Mistakes that waste app budgets
- Optimising for install cost while retention quietly collapses
- No MMP, so cross-network attribution is guesswork
- Ignoring the store listing, capping conversion on every paid click
- One blended target across iOS and Android
- No onboarding optimisation, so acquired users never reach the activation moment
- Incentivised installs that inflate numbers and destroy cohort quality
What does app marketing include?
| Discipline | What it covers |
|---|---|
| App store optimisation | Titles, screenshots, video, ratings, keywords, localisation |
| Paid user acquisition | Google App Campaigns, Meta, Apple Search Ads, networks and influencers |
| Activation | Onboarding, first-value moments, permission prompts, deep links |
| Retention and re-engagement | Push, in-app messaging, email, WhatsApp, remarketing |
| Measurement | MMP or Firebase setup, event taxonomy, cohort dashboards |
How much does app user acquisition cost in India?
App install costs vary by category, platform and optimisation goal. India has some of the lowest cost per install figures globally for broad categories, but what matters is the cost per valuable user — someone who registers, transacts or subscribes. A cheap install that never opens the app a second time is expensive.
Work out affordable acquisition cost from cohort value: if an average user generates ₹600 of gross profit in their first six months, and 30% of installers become active users, you can afford up to about ₹180 per install to break even over six months — before counting organic halo. Management fees follow standard retainer or percentage models; creative for app campaigns (video, playables, localised variants) is a major cost driver.
Which app metrics matter?
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Cost per install (CPI) | Top-of-funnel price — never the goal on its own |
| Cost per activation / first transaction | Whether installs turn into users |
| D1 / D7 / D30 retention | Whether users come back |
| LTV by cohort and channel | What a user is worth, and which channels bring valuable ones |
| Payback period | How quickly acquisition cost is recovered |
| Store conversion rate | How well the store page turns views into installs |
Android vs iOS in India
Android accounts for the large majority of Indian smartphones, so it dominates install volume. iOS users are fewer, typically concentrated in metros and higher-income segments, and often monetise better. iOS measurement is also constrained by Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework, which limits user-level attribution. We run separate campaigns, targets and reporting for each platform rather than blending them. See iOS vs Android economics.
App launch sequence
- Measurement first — event taxonomy, MMP or Firebase, postbacks to ad networks.
- Store page ready — screenshots, video, keywords and localisation tested.
- Soft launch — limited geography or budget to validate activation and retention.
- Scale acquisition — optimise for in-app events once volume allows.
- Retention loop — onboarding, lifecycle messaging and re-engagement campaigns.
App marketing by app type
| App type | Core channels | Key metric |
|---|---|---|
| Fintech | Google App campaigns, Meta, Apple Search Ads | KYC completion, first transaction |
| Commerce and delivery | Meta, Google, re-engagement | First order, repeat orders |
| Gaming | Meta, Google, ad networks | Day-7 retention, revenue per user |
| Edtech | YouTube, Meta, search | Trial-to-paid conversion |
| Utilities and SaaS | Search, ASO, content | Activation and retention |
A worked example: optimising past the install
A fintech app's install costs looked good, but few users completed KYC. We changed campaign optimisation to the KYC-complete event, fixed attribution in the mobile measurement partner, simplified onboarding screens with the product team and added re-engagement messages. Cost per install rose, but cost per activated user fell.

- Launch (week 2–4). Clean structures, verified conversion signals, the first creative sprint and landing-page fixes.
- Optimise (months 2–3). A weekly test cadence, with budget following the cheapest incremental results rather than platform-reported ones.

Frequently asked questions
What should we optimise for instead of installs?
Your activation event — the action that correlates with retention and revenue. For a fintech app that might be first transaction; for a content app, a D7 return.
How much does app user acquisition cost in India?
Install costs range from the low tens of rupees for casual apps to several hundred for high-value fintech users. Cost per retained, valuable user is the number that matters.
Does ASO still matter with paid UA running?
More, not less. Store conversion rate applies to paid traffic too, so ASO improvements reduce your effective acquisition cost everywhere.
What is a mobile measurement partner?
A service (such as AppsFlyer, Adjust or Branch) that attributes installs and in-app events to ad networks, deduplicates across them and handles platform privacy rules. Firebase with Google Analytics can cover smaller apps.
Should we optimise campaigns for installs or in-app events?
Start with installs only if you lack event volume; move to in-app events (registration, purchase, subscription) as soon as there's enough data, because install-optimised campaigns find users who install and leave.
How important are ratings for app growth?
Very. Ratings affect store conversion and ranking. Prompt satisfied users for reviews at positive moments and respond to negative reviews quickly.
Do influencers work for app marketing?
Yes, particularly for fintech, gaming, education and consumer apps with a clear demonstration. Use unique links or codes and compare retention of influencer-acquired users with paid users.
Is it worth building an app at all?
Only if users need to return often or need device features. Many businesses do better with a fast mobile website. See mobile app development.
What is an MMP?
A mobile measurement partner — a tool that attributes installs and in-app events to marketing sources across platforms.
Is Apple Search Ads worth it in India?
For apps with iOS-heavy, higher-income audiences, often yes — the intent is high and competition can be lower than on Android.
How does app store optimisation help?
Better titles, keywords, screenshots and ratings improve organic installs and the conversion rate of paid traffic.
How long does App Marketing take to show results?
Tracking fixes and search campaigns often show improvement within two to four weeks; prospecting on Meta or YouTube usually needs three to six weeks of creative testing; SEO compounds over three to nine months. We agree leading indicators up front so progress is visible early.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
