AEO & GEO: get cited when AI answers the question

The short answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) are about becoming the source an AI answer quotes, not just a blue link it might list. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best approach to something, or Google answers with an AI Overview instead of results, the winners are pages that are easy to extract, verifiably expert and consistently identified across the web.

PMG builds this into every page we produce: an answer-first structure, question-shaped headings, claims attached to evidence, and an entity footprint that's identical everywhere.

What actually influences AI citation

  • Answer-first structure. A direct, self-contained answer in the opening two to four sentences of every page and major section.
  • Extractable formatting. One idea per paragraph, question-phrased headings, tables for comparisons, lists for steps.
  • Evidence attached to claims. Statistics, examples, formulas and dates. Assertions without support don't get quoted.
  • Entity consistency. Your brand name, address, phone number and service names byte-for-byte identical across the site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • First-hand experience. Original data, real campaign detail and genuine opinion — the things a model can't produce by summarising the web.
  • Crawlability. Content present in server-rendered HTML. If a bot has to execute JavaScript to see your page, many won't.
  • Third-party corroboration. Being described consistently by other credible sources is what builds an entity a model trusts.

What doesn't work, despite the claims

  • Treating llms.txt as a ranking mechanism — Google has stated it doesn't affect its systems
  • Chopping content into artificially tiny "chunks" for AI
  • Rewriting copy in strange "AI-friendly" phrasing; language models understand normal writing
  • Buying brand mentions; inauthentic citation patterns are detectable and worthless
  • Treating schema as a ranking booster rather than an extraction aid
  • Publishing volume without depth, which now triggers scaled-content penalties

How we run an AEO/GEO engagement

  1. Entity audit. Every mention of your business across the web, checked for consistency. Inconsistency is the most common and most fixable problem.
  2. Structured data implementation. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article, Person and BreadcrumbList, validated and accurate.
  3. Content restructuring. Existing pages rewritten answer-first, with question-shaped headings and evidence attached to claims.
  4. Author and expertise signals. Real bylines, real credentials, real bios — E-E-A-T made concrete rather than claimed.
  5. Gap analysis against AI answers. We ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and see who gets cited, and why.
  6. Measurement. Citation tracking across engines, branded search volume, and AI-referred traffic in analytics.

Why AI referrals matter disproportionately

Traffic arriving from an AI answer has usually been pre-qualified: the engine recommended you, which carries more weight than a position in a list. Volumes are typically smaller than organic search, but intent and conversion rates are frequently much higher. For considered purchases, being the cited source is closer to a referral than a ranking.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

In practice they are one programme: SEO makes you findable and trusted, AEO makes your answers extractable, GEO makes your brand the one assistants name.

What does the research say actually works?

The most-cited academic work is GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., Princeton and collaborators), which built a benchmark of around 10,000 queries and tested content changes. Methods that added citations to sources, quotations from relevant experts and statistics raised a source's visibility in generative answers by up to roughly 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help (arXiv:2311.09735). The study used experimental engines, so treat the numbers as directional — but the direction matches what we observe: specific, sourced, well-structured pages get quoted.

Google's own position is that its AI features rely on the same foundations as search — crawlable, helpful content and good page experience — with no special markup required to appear (Google Search Central).

The AEO/GEO page pattern we build

  • A direct answer to the page's main question in the first two to four sentences
  • Question-style H2s that mirror how buyers ask
  • Key takeaways near the top
  • Every factual claim attached to a number, example or named source
  • Tables for comparisons, costs and benchmarks — easy for machines to lift
  • Definitions linked to a glossary for the terms that matter
  • FAQs with complete, standalone answers
  • Organization, Service, FAQPage and LocalBusiness schema that matches visible content
  • Identical name, address and phone everywhere the business appears — see NAP and entity

How do you measure AI search visibility?

MeasureHow we track it
Citation shareA fixed set of 30–100 buyer questions asked across assistants each month; we record whether and how you're cited
Recommendation presenceWhether you're named for "best / which / who" questions in your category and city
AI referral trafficSessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot and similar sources in GA4
Google generative AI performanceSearch Console's generative AI performance report — how your pages perform in AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overview presenceTracked queries where your pages appear as a source
Entity accuracyWhether assistants describe your business correctly — services, location, contact

AI referrals are usually small in volume but high in intent, because the visitor has already had their question answered and chosen to click.

What does AEO/GEO cost?

We run AEO/GEO as part of an SEO programme or as a standalone sprint. A standalone engagement typically covers an AI-visibility baseline, entity and schema fixes, rewriting the 10–30 pages that matter most commercially, and building citable assets such as data pages and glossaries. Pricing follows SEO ranges — from about ₹40,000 a month for a focused programme to ₹2–3 lakh for larger sites — plus 18% GST. Our AEO vs SEO comparison explains how to split effort.

What Google's own AI optimisation guide says (July 2026)

Google published Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, last updated 10 July 2026 (Google Search Central). Its position is clear: optimising for AI Overviews and AI Mode is still SEO. How we apply it:

Google saysWhat we do
Create valuable, non-commodity content with a unique point of viewWe build pages on your own expertise, data and methods — not rewrites of what already ranks
Content must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippetWe check indexing, crawlability, JavaScript rendering and that no snippet restrictions block you
Provide a good page experience; make main content easy to distinguishFast mobile pages, clean layouts, no intrusive interstitials
Use Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles where relevantFeeds and profiles are part of every eCommerce and local AEO programme
AI features use retrieval and "query fan-out" — related sub-queries run in parallelWe cover the follow-up questions a buyer would ask, so your site answers the whole topic

The myths Google explicitly rules out

  • Creating llms.txt or other "AI text files", special markup or Markdown copies for Google — Google says it doesn't use them
  • "Chunking" content into tiny pieces for machines
  • Rewriting content in a special style just for AI systems
  • Chasing every long-tail variation of a query
  • Seeking inauthentic "mentions" across the web
  • Over-focusing on structured data — it isn't required for generative AI search (though it still helps rich results)
  • Trusting third-party tools that claim insider access — Google says no third-party tool has access to its ranking or AI systems

We follow this list. Our structure — direct answers, clear headings, tables — exists because it helps readers, which is also what Google recommends.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

It's an extension of it, not a replacement. Both need genuine expertise, clean technical foundations and consistent entity signals. AEO adds emphasis on extractable structure and verifiable evidence, because the output is a quoted answer rather than a ranked list.

Can you guarantee we'll be cited by ChatGPT?

No, and nobody can. Citation depends on each model's training data, retrieval behaviour and update cycles. What we can do is make your content the most citable, best-corroborated source on your topics.

How do we measure AI visibility?

By tracking whether your brand appears in answers to a defined set of buyer questions across engines, monitoring referral traffic from AI domains in GA4, and watching branded search volume.

Does schema markup still matter after FAQ rich results were removed?

Yes. Rich results are only one use of schema. AI systems and search engines still use structured data to understand and extract content accurately.

What is an answer engine?

Any system that answers a question directly instead of returning a list of links — Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets, voice assistants, and chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.

Does llms.txt help AI visibility?

Not for Google. Google's July 2026 guidance says llms.txt and similar files "will neither harm nor help" visibility in its generative AI features, because Google Search doesn't use them (Google Search Central). Some other AI tools may read it as a summary, so it's harmless to keep — but we never sell it as a lever.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

Assistants that search the live web can pick up improved pages within weeks of indexing. Recommendations that depend on broader brand mentions take longer — typically months of consistent PR, reviews and content.

Should we block AI crawlers?

For most businesses that want to be recommended, no. Blocking crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from their answers. Publishers with licensing concerns may choose differently.

Is AEO only for large brands?

No. Local businesses benefit quickly from accurate entity information, reviews and clear service pages, because assistants answering "near me" questions lean on the same signals.

Does structured data guarantee AI citations?

No. Google's own guidance says structured data isn't required for AI features. It helps machines understand pages, but useful, clearly written content matters most.

Should we create an llms.txt file?

It neither helps nor harms according to Google's guidance; we focus effort on content quality and crawlability.

How do we track AI search traffic?

Through referral data from AI tools in analytics, Search Console's reporting for AI features where available, and regular checks of answers for priority questions.

Will we own the ad accounts and data?

Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.

What do you need from us to start?

Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
