Google Ads that capture demand profitably
The short answer
Google Ads is demand capture: the people clicking already told Google what they want. That makes it the fastest channel to a reliable signal — and the easiest place to waste money, because Google's defaults are built to spend your budget, not to protect your margin.
PMG runs Google accounts with tight match-type discipline, aggressive negative keyword hygiene, conversion actions that reflect real business value, and Performance Max structured so you can actually see inside it.
What we run
- Search campaigns with match-type and negative discipline
- Performance Max with asset group segmentation and brand exclusions
- Shopping campaigns with feed optimisation
- Demand Gen for visual, mid-funnel capture
- YouTube campaigns for demand creation
- Remarketing and customer-match lists
- Local campaigns and Google Business Profile integration
- Conversion tracking with enhanced conversions and offline imports
How we structure Google accounts
- Define the conversion properly. A form fill and a qualified enquiry are not the same event. We assign values that reflect real worth.
- Protect the brand term. Cheap, high-converting, and the first thing competitors attack.
- Separate brand from non-brand. Blending them produces a flattering account-level ROAS that hides non-brand failure.
- Structure PMax to be legible. Asset groups by product margin or intent, brand traffic excluded, search-term insights reviewed weekly.
- Negative keywords every week. This is where most wasted spend hides in Indian accounts.
- Feed offline conversions back for lead-gen accounts so bidding optimises toward revenue, not form fills.
Where Google Ads budgets leak
- Broad match with automated bidding and no negative keyword programme
- Brand and non-brand in one campaign, hiding non-brand performance
- PMax absorbing brand search and claiming credit for it
- Optimising to "conversions" where a newsletter signup and a ₹2 lakh order count equally
- Ignoring impression share lost to budget on your best-converting campaign
- Landing every ad on the homepage instead of a matched page
How does Google Ads work?
Google Ads is an auction that runs every time someone searches, watches YouTube or loads a page in Google's network. For search ads, Google calculates Ad Rank from your bid, the expected quality of the ad and landing page, the context of the search and the expected impact of extensions. Higher-quality, more relevant ads can win better positions at a lower cost per click than competitors bidding more. See Quality Score.
What you control:
- Which searches you appear on — keywords, match types, negatives and, increasingly, the signals you give automated campaigns
- What the ad says — headlines and descriptions that match the query
- Where the click lands — a page that answers exactly what was searched
- What Google optimises for — the conversion actions you define and the values you assign
What does Google Ads cost in India?
Cost per click is set in the auction, so it varies by category, competition, location and quality. High-value categories — insurance, loans, education, real estate, legal and healthcare — cost the most. Beyond media, Google Ads management in India typically costs ₹20,000 to ₹3 lakh a month or 10–20% of spend, with hybrids combining a base fee and a lower percentage (upGrowth, 2026).
| Budget reality | What it can support |
|---|---|
| ₹30,000 – ₹1 lakh / month | One service, tight geography, Search only |
| ₹1 – 5 lakh / month | Several services or cities, Search + remarketing, possibly PMax |
| ₹5 – 25 lakh / month | Search, PMax/Shopping, YouTube, structured testing |
| ₹25 lakh+ / month | Full portfolio with incrementality testing |
Google charges 18% GST on ad spend billed through Google India; agency fees also attract GST, and registered businesses can usually claim input tax credit (ClearTax).
Google Ads benchmarks — and why yours will differ
The WordStream/LocaliQ 2025 study of more than 16,000 search campaigns (April 2024 to March 2025) found:
| Metric | 2025 average | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate | 6.66% | Up slightly overall, down in about half of industries |
| Conversion rate | 7.52% | Up in 65% of industries |
| Cost per lead | $70.11 | Up from $66.69 |
| Cost per click | $5.26 | Up in 87% of industries |
Source: WordStream, 2025. These are US-dominated numbers — Indian CPCs are far lower — so use them for direction, not targets. The direction is clear: clicks keep getting more expensive, so profit comes from conversion rate, lead quality and cutting waste.
Match types, explained simply
| Match type | Matches | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Exact | Searches with the same meaning as the keyword | Proven, high-value terms |
| Phrase | Searches that include the meaning of the keyword | Controlled expansion |
| Broad | Related searches, guided by Smart Bidding signals | Discovery — only with strong conversion data and a maintained negative list |
Broad match with poor conversion tracking is the fastest way to spend a budget on irrelevant searches. With good tracking and weekly negatives, it can find profitable queries you'd never have listed.
What to check in a Google Ads audit
- Are conversion actions counting real leads or sales only, once each, with sensible values?
- Is enhanced conversions or offline conversion import set up for lead generation?
- How much spend went to search terms that are clearly irrelevant in the last 90 days?
- Is brand search in its own campaign, and excluded from Performance Max?
- Do ad groups send people to pages matched to the query?
- Are location settings "presence" rather than "presence or interest" where local matters?
- Are budgets limiting campaigns that hit their target, while others overspend?
Google Ads by business type
| Business | Core campaigns | Primary KPI |
|---|---|---|
| Local services and clinics | Search, local assets, calls | Cost per booked appointment |
| eCommerce | Shopping, Performance Max, brand search | ROAS against break-even, new-customer share |
| Lead generation | Search, Demand Gen, offline conversions | Cost per qualified lead or sale |
| B2B | Search on problem terms, YouTube for consideration | Cost per opportunity |
| Apps | App campaigns for installs and in-app actions | Cost per activated user |
What's changing in Google Ads in 2026
Google keeps moving advertisers toward automation: Performance Max, AI-powered search features that broaden matching, and automatically generated assets. That makes four inputs decisive — accurate conversion data (including offline conversions), clear value signals, strong landing pages and well-chosen brand and negative-keyword controls. Ads now also appear alongside AI-generated answers in Search, so advertisers need pages that answer questions clearly as well as convert.
A worked example: rebuilding a lead-generation account
An education provider's account had 40 campaigns, broad match without negatives and form fills counted as conversions. We consolidated to six campaigns by programme and intent, added negatives for job and free-course searches, connected the CRM to upload enrolled students as offline conversions, and switched bidding to value. The aim: fewer, better leads — judged on enrolments, not form fills.

How a Google Ads engagement with PMG runs
- Audit (week 0–1). Accounts, analytics, tracking, website, CRM flow and competitors reviewed, with a written list of what's broken, what's wasted and the three moves we'd make first.
- Plan (week 1–2). Break-even ROAS or a target cost per lead, a measurement plan and a 90-day roadmap for Google Ads, with owners and dates.
- Launch (week 2–4). Clean structures, verified conversion signals, the first creative sprint and landing-page fixes.
- Optimise (months 2–3). A weekly test cadence, with budget following the cheapest incremental results rather than platform-reported ones.
- Scale (month 3 onwards). New channels, geographies and retention loops, added only when the economics hold.
Every week you get a one-page scorecard, a change log, the test board and a 30-minute call with your strategist. See how we work and pricing for details.
Why teams choose PMG for Google Ads
- Measurement first. Unit economics and clean tracking come before any increase in spend.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Google Ads cost in India?
CPCs range from a few rupees in low-competition categories to several hundred in legal, insurance, education and B2B software. What matters is cost per acquisition against your affordable CAC, not CPC.
Is Performance Max worth running?
Often yes for eCommerce, with brand traffic excluded and asset groups segmented so you can read the results. See Performance Max.
Should we use broad match?
Only with strong conversion signal, a disciplined negative keyword routine and weekly search-term review. Without those, broad match is an expensive way to discover irrelevant queries.
How fast do Google Ads work?
Search campaigns usually produce a readable signal within one to three weeks, making Google the fastest channel to validate demand.
Is Google Ads better than SEO?
They do different jobs. Google Ads buys immediate visibility and tells you which searches convert; SEO earns lasting visibility at a lower marginal cost. Most businesses run both, and use paid search data to prioritise SEO content. See SEO vs PPC.
What is a good Quality Score?
Seven or above is healthy for important keywords, but Quality Score is a diagnostic. Improve it by tightening the link between keyword, ad and landing page, not by chasing the number.
Should we run Google Ads on weekends and nights?
Only if data shows conversions then. Many B2B and service businesses reduce bids outside working hours; many consumer categories peak in the evening and at weekends.
How do you track phone calls from Google Ads?
Call assets and website call tracking, counted as conversions only above a minimum call duration, plus call outcomes imported from your CRM where available.
What is Google Ads remarketing?
Showing ads to people who visited your site or app, or engaged with your videos, across Search, YouTube and display — useful for longer decisions, when capped and segmented by intent. See remarketing.
What is Performance Max and should we use it?
Performance Max runs across Google's inventory from one campaign. It can scale well with good conversion data and feeds, but brand traffic should be separated and results checked against blended metrics.
How long before Google Ads shows results?
Search campaigns often show useful data within two to four weeks; smart bidding usually needs several weeks of conversions to stabilise.
Do you manage Google Ads in multiple countries?
Yes — with country-specific campaigns, languages, currencies and conversion tracking.
What is a negative keyword?
A term you tell Google not to show your ads for — such as "free" or "jobs" — so budget isn't wasted on irrelevant searches.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
