CPI (Cost Per Install)
The short answer
CPI (Cost Per Install) is the average ad spend required for one app install. ₹2 lakh for 8,000 installs is a ₹25 CPI.
CPI is useful context but a poor target. Installs are easy to buy; users who open the app again and do something valuable are not. Optimising for cheap installs reliably produces cohorts that churn within days.
What to optimise instead
- Cost per activation — the first meaningful in-app action
- Cost per retained user — users still active on day 7 or day 30
- Cost per paying user — for monetised apps
- Cohort ROAS — revenue from a cohort divided by what it cost
What affects CPI
- Platform — iOS installs usually cost more than Android in India
- Category — finance and gaming are expensive; utilities are cheaper
- Store listing quality — better ASO raises conversion on every paid click
- Creative — especially playables and demo videos
From CPI to cost per paying user
| Metric | Example |
|---|---|
| CPI | ₹40 |
| Install → registration | 50% |
| Registration → first purchase | 20% |
| Cost per paying user | ₹40 ÷ (0.5 × 0.2) = ₹400 |
CPI in practice
An app campaign spends ₹1,00,000 and drives 4,000 installs: CPI is ₹25. If only 20% of installers activate, the cost per activated user is ₹125 — the more useful number.
How to improve CPI and what comes after it
- Optimise store listings to raise install rates
- Test creative that shows real app use
- Optimise for in-app events, not just installs
CPI in India
Android installs in India are among the cheapest globally, but cheap installs often bring low-intent users. Optimising for in-app events usually produces better economics than chasing the lowest CPI.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good CPI in India?
It ranges from the low tens of rupees for casual apps to hundreds for fintech. Judge it against the value of a retained user.
Why is iOS CPI higher?
Smaller audiences, more competition and higher expected spending power. iOS users often carry higher LTV, which justifies it.
How do we lower CPI?
Better store pages, stronger creative, broader targeting and optimising toward valuable in-app events rather than cheap installs.
Should campaigns optimise for installs?
Only at the start or when event volume is too low. Move to in-app events as soon as possible.
Is CPI a good success metric?
On its own, no — measure cost per activated or paying user.
Why is iOS CPI often higher in India?
Smaller, higher-income audiences and different competition raise costs, though users may be more valuable.
Are incentivised installs worth it?
Rarely for long-term growth — they often bring users with little intent.
