Payback period
The short answer
CAC payback period is the number of months it takes for a customer's gross profit to repay the cost of acquiring them. If you spend ₹900 to acquire a customer who generates ₹300 of gross profit a month, payback is three months.
While LTV:CAC tells you whether a customer is profitable eventually, payback tells you when — which determines how much cash you need to fund growth.
Why payback matters
Two businesses with identical LTV:CAC ratios can have very different futures. One recovers its acquisition cost in two months and can reinvest quickly; the other waits eighteen months and needs outside funding to grow. Investors and founders increasingly treat payback as the primary growth constraint.
Typical targets
- D2C eCommerce — often under 3–6 months, because repeat behaviour is less certain
- Subscription consumer — commonly 6–12 months
- B2B SaaS — often 12–18 months, supported by contracts and retention
- Bootstrapped businesses — shorter, because cash is the constraint
Payback example
Payback in practice
A customer costs ₹1,200 to acquire and generates ₹300 contribution margin a month: payback is four months.
How to shorten payback
- Lower CAC
- Increase first-order margin
- Encourage early repeat purchases
Common mistakes
- Using revenue instead of margin
- Ignoring churn
- One payback figure for all channels
Frequently asked questions
How can we shorten payback?
Raise first-order contribution (AOV, pricing, lower fulfilment costs), improve early repeat purchase with lifecycle marketing, or reduce CAC.
Should payback use revenue or gross profit?
Gross profit. Revenue-based payback overstates how quickly you recover cash.
What is a good payback period?
It depends on funding and business model. Shorter is safer; many businesses aim for months rather than years.
What's a healthy payback period?
It depends on cash flow and funding; many businesses aim for months rather than years.
Why does payback matter for cash flow?
Long payback periods tie up cash in customer acquisition.
