Google Display Ads with the waste taken out
The short answer
The Google Display Network is enormous, cheap and full of places you don't want to be. Run with default settings, a meaningful share of a display budget goes to mobile app inventory, made-for-advertising sites and placements nobody sees.
PMG runs Display primarily as a remarketing and incremental-reach channel, with aggressive placement exclusions, mobile app inventory excluded by default, frequency caps, and measurement based on incremental lift rather than the click-through rate of a banner.
How we keep Display clean
- Mobile app category excluded unless the campaign specifically wants app inventory
- Placement reports reviewed weekly with exclusions applied
- Content-suitability settings set conservatively
- Frequency caps applied at campaign and account level
- Viewability monitored, with poor-performing placements cut
- Conversion measurement based on view-through and geo testing, not click-through rate
What Display is genuinely good for
- Remarketing at low cost across a very large inventory pool
- Cheap incremental reach once Meta and YouTube audiences are saturated
- Cart and browse abandonment with dynamic remarketing feeds
- Brand presence in contextual environments relevant to your category
- Geographic reinforcement around retail locations and events
Mistakes with GDN
- Leaving mobile app placements on, which usually generates accidental clicks
- No placement exclusion routine, so spend drifts to low-quality inventory
- Optimising to CTR, which rewards the most accidental-click-prone placements
- No frequency cap, producing enormous exposure counts for a small audience
- Using Display for prospecting before exhausting better channels
- Judging remarketing display on last-click ROAS without incrementality testing
Where Google Display is worth the money
| Use case | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Remarketing to site visitors | Reminds interested prospects, especially for longer decisions |
| Custom segments from search intent | Reaches people researching your category |
| Contextual placements on relevant sites | Right environment for niche products |
| Customer-list exclusions and upsell | Targets or excludes existing customers |
| Launch awareness with frequency caps | Cheap reach alongside video |
Placement hygiene checklist
- Exclude mobile-app categories that produce accidental clicks
- Exclude sensitive content categories that don't suit the brand
- Review placement reports every week at first, then monthly
- Build an exclusion list of poor placements and apply it across campaigns
- Use frequency caps
- Compare view-through and click-through conversions separately
Display creative that performs
- Clear product or offer visible at small sizes
- Brand logo present but not dominant
- One message per ad
- Strong contrast so ads stand out on busy pages
- Multiple aspect ratios for responsive ads
Display by business type
| Business | Best use of Display | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| eCommerce | Dynamic remarketing | Low-quality app placements |
| Lead generation | Retargeting engaged visitors | Accidental clicks |
| B2B | Placements on relevant industry sites | Broad audiences with no intent |
| Local businesses | Limited — usually better spent elsewhere | Wasted reach |
A worked example
A retailer's Display campaign reported cheap clicks but no sales. Placement reports showed most spend on mobile games and low-quality apps. We excluded app categories, added a curated placement list, switched to dynamic remarketing for product viewers, and cut the budget to what proved incremental.

How a Google Display Ads engagement with PMG runs
- Audit (week 0–1). Accounts, analytics, tracking, website, CRM flow and competitors reviewed, with a written list of what's broken, what's wasted and the three moves we'd make first.
- Plan (week 1–2). Break-even ROAS or a target cost per lead, a measurement plan and a 90-day roadmap for Google Display Ads, with owners and dates.
- Launch (week 2–4). Clean structures, verified conversion signals, the first creative sprint and landing-page fixes.
- Optimise (months 2–3). A weekly test cadence, with budget following the cheapest incremental results rather than platform-reported ones.
- Scale (month 3 onwards). New channels, geographies and retention loops, added only when the economics hold.
Every week you get a one-page scorecard, a change log, the test board and a 30-minute call with your strategist. See how we work and pricing for details.
Why teams choose PMG for Google Display Ads

- Senior hands on the account. The strategist you speak to is the person running it.
- Weekly transparency. Scorecard, change log and test board — every week.
- Short minimum terms. We keep clients with results, not contracts.

Frequently asked questions
Does Display advertising actually work?
As remarketing, reliably. As cold prospecting, rarely at a competitive cost — Meta and YouTube usually do it better. Use Display for what it's good at.
Why is our Display CTR so high but conversions so low?
Almost always mobile app inventory generating accidental taps. Exclude app placements and watch both metrics normalise.
Should we use responsive display ads?
Yes for efficiency, but supply good assets. Auto-generated combinations from weak inputs perform poorly and can damage brand perception.
What is a good CTR for Display?
Display CTRs are typically low, and a high CTR can be a warning sign of accidental clicks. Focus on conversions and assisted conversions.
Is Display good for B2B?
Selectively — for remarketing, contextual placements on industry sites and account lists. Broad B2B prospecting on Display is usually inefficient.
How is Display different from Demand Gen?
Demand Gen serves across YouTube, Discover and Gmail with social-style creative and conversion focus; Display serves across the wider network of sites and apps. See Demand Gen.
Is Google Display worth it?
For remarketing and carefully curated placements, often yes; broad prospecting on Display rarely beats Meta, YouTube or Demand Gen.
How do you prevent ads appearing on bad sites?
With exclusion lists, content-category exclusions and regular placement reviews.
What sizes do display ads need?
Responsive display ads adapt automatically from your images, logos and text; uploaded image ads need standard sizes.
How do we stop accidental clicks?
Exclude mobile app categories and review placement reports regularly.
How long does Google Display Ads take to show results?
Tracking fixes and search campaigns often show improvement within two to four weeks; prospecting on Meta or YouTube usually needs three to six weeks of creative testing; SEO compounds over three to nine months. We agree leading indicators up front so progress is visible early.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
