AEO vs SEO: what's actually different?
The short answer
SEO aims to rank pages in search results; AEO aims to have your content extracted and cited in direct answers — AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and voice assistants. The foundations are the same: genuine expertise, crawlable pages, clear structure and trust. AEO adds emphasis on answer-first formatting, evidence and consistent entity information.
Side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and earn clicks | Be cited in answers |
| Output | A list of links | A synthesised answer with sources |
| Key signals | Relevance, authority, experience, technical health | Same, plus extractability and corroboration |
| Content shape | Comprehensive pages | Direct answers within comprehensive pages |
| Entity work | Helpful | Essential |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Citations, AI referrals, branded search |
What's the same
- Genuine expertise and first-hand experience
- Crawlable, server-rendered content
- Clear information architecture
- Structured data
- Credible third-party mentions and links
What AEO emphasises more
- A direct answer in the first two to four sentences
- Question-shaped headings
- Claims backed by numbers, sources and examples
- Identical brand details across the web
- Content that adds something an assistant can't find elsewhere
Scenarios, and the call we'd make
- A B2B SaaS company whose buyers ask ChatGPT for tool recommendations — prioritise entity consistency, comparison pages and third-party mentions alongside standard SEO.
- A local clinic — classic local SEO first; AEO follows naturally from good profiles and clear service pages.
- A fintech explaining financial concepts — answer-first explainers with expert review, which serve both rankings and citations.
- An eCommerce brand — product and category SEO first; AEO matters most for buying guides and comparisons.

| Authority | Links, domain strength | Brand mentions, entity accuracy |
| Business | Leads and revenue from organic | Leads from AI referrals, branded search lift |
What the research says
The GEO: Generative Engine Optimization paper tested content changes across about 10,000 queries and found that adding citations, quotations and statistics increased a source's visibility in generative answers by up to roughly 40%, while keyword stuffing didn't help (arXiv:2311.09735). Google says its AI features draw on the same fundamentals as search, with no special optimisation required beyond helpful, crawlable content (Google Search Central).
AEO additions to a normal SEO programme
- Answer-first introductions on every key page
- Question-based H2s and complete FAQ answers
- Tables and definitions that are easy to extract
- Sources for statistics and claims
- Schema for organisation, services, FAQs, articles
- Entity consistency — same name, address, phone and descriptions everywhere
- Monitoring of how assistants describe your brand
Google's verdict: AEO and GEO are still SEO
In July 2026 Google updated its Search Central guide on generative AI features and framed AEO and GEO as SEO (source). For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed, eligible to show with a snippet and genuinely helpful — and the guide lists things that don't help, including llms.txt files, content "chunking", rewriting for AI and chasing inauthentic mentions.
The distinction still matters for budgeting and reporting: AEO work concentrates on how answers are extracted and cited, and on assistants outside Google. But it should never be sold as a separate set of tricks.
Pros and cons of focusing on AEO
- Pros: visibility in AI answers and featured snippets, brand mentions in AI assistants, content that answers questions clearly
- Cons: harder to measure, fewer clicks when answers are shown directly, no shortcuts beyond good SEO
Common myths
- "AEO needs special markup or llms.txt" — Google says neither is required
- "AI search replaces SEO" — AI features rely on indexed, useful pages
- "Chunking content for AI helps" — Google advises against writing for AI separately
- "Only big brands get cited" — specific, well-sourced pages from smaller sites are cited too
Example: a fintech's guide strategy
A lending company rewrote its guides to answer each question in the first lines, added worked examples and sources, and kept pages up to date. Rankings, featured snippets and mentions in AI answers all improved — from the same SEO work.
Frequently asked questions
Should we hire separate AEO and SEO teams?
No. The same team and the same pages should serve both.
Does AEO reduce clicks?
Answers can reduce clicks on simple questions. But cited brands gain credibility, and the visitors who do click are often better qualified.
Is GEO different from AEO?
They overlap heavily. GEO puts more weight on how AI models understand your brand as an entity. See GEO.
Do we need new content for AEO?
Usually you restructure existing content first — adding direct answers, clearer headings and evidence — before creating new pages.
Will AEO replace SEO?
No. AI answers rely on indexed, trusted web content. SEO remains the foundation; AEO makes content more extractable and citable.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Assistants that search the web can reflect improved pages within weeks of indexing; brand-level recommendations take longer.
Do we need separate AEO content?
Mostly no — improve existing pages with direct answers, structure and sources. Add new pages for questions you don't yet answer.
Is AEO a separate service from SEO?
In practice it's part of good SEO — with extra attention to clear answers, entities and citations.
How do we know if AI assistants mention us?
By regularly checking answers for priority questions and tracking referral traffic from AI tools.
