Instagram engagement rate calculator

The short answer

This free Instagram engagement rate calculator works out an account's engagement rate the way most brands and agencies do: total interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) per post, divided by followers, as a percentage. Add average reach and you also get engagement rate by reach, the more accurate version for your own account. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Use the last 9–12 posts for a fair average.

Adds engagement rate by reach — the most accurate version.

Engagement rate (by followers)

3.72%

Excellent for a creator account (3%+).

Engagement rate (by reach)

Add reach

Average interactions per post

929

Comments per 100 likes

4.4

Very low comment ratios on large accounts can be a sign of inauthentic likes.

Saves + shares share of engagement

10%

Saves and shares signal value more strongly than likes.

Formula: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ followers × 100. Benchmarks differ by source and method — compare like with like, and track your own trend over time.

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

There are four common formulas. They answer different questions, which is one reason published benchmarks disagree.

FormulaCalculationBest for
By followers(Likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100, averaged per postComparing public profiles, vetting creators
By reachInteractions ÷ reach × 100Your own account; how engaging content is for people who saw it
By impressionsInteractions ÷ impressions × 100Boosted posts and ads
By views (Reels)Interactions ÷ plays × 100Reels-led accounts

Worked example: an account with 25,000 followers posts 12 times and receives 9,600 likes, 420 comments, 780 saves and 350 shares. Total interactions are 11,150, or about 929 per post. Engagement rate by followers = 929 ÷ 25,000 × 100 ≈ 3.72%. If average reach per post is 18,000, engagement rate by reach = 929 ÷ 18,000 × 100 ≈ 5.16%.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on the type of account and the method used:

Source and account typeBenchmark
Rival IQ 2025, brand accounts (all industries)Median about 0.36% per post; top quartile above about 1%
Socialinsider, early 2026 (platform-wide, brand-heavy data)Around 0.45–0.48%
Creator and influencer benchmarks (commonly cited)Above 1% good; above 3% excellent
Creator data by tierSmaller accounts typically higher; very large accounts often around 1%

Sources: benchmark summaries from iqfluence and Apaya, citing Rival IQ, Socialinsider, HypeAuditor and Buffer. Different datasets (brands vs creators), formulas (followers vs reach) and periods produce very different "averages" — so the most reliable benchmark is your own trend and accounts of similar size in your category.

Why engagement rate falls as follower count rises

Larger audiences are broader and less personally connected to the creator or brand, and a smaller share of followers sees each post. That's why a nano creator with 5,000 followers can show a far higher rate than a celebrity with 5 million. When vetting influencers, compare within tiers:

TierFollowersWhat to expect
Nano1k–10kHighest rates; tight communities
Micro10k–100kStrong rates; niche authority
Mid-tier100k–500kModerate rates; wider reach
Macro500k–1MLower rates; broad awareness
Mega1M+Lowest rates typically; mass reach

How to spot fake or low-quality engagement

  • Comments that are generic ("Nice!", emoji strings) rather than about the content
  • Very low comments relative to likes on a large account
  • Sudden follower spikes without a viral post to explain them
  • Audience location that doesn't match the creator's language or content
  • Engagement that is wildly inconsistent from post to post
  • Many comments from accounts with no posts or profile pictures

Use the "comments per 100 likes" output as a quick sense-check, then look at the comments themselves. See influencer marketing for how we vet creators.

How to improve your Instagram engagement rate

  • Lead with Reels hooks — show the payoff in the first second; see hook rate
  • Make posts worth saving — checklists, how-tos, comparisons and carousels
  • Ask specific questions — prompts people can answer quickly, not "thoughts?"
  • Reply fast — early comment replies keep conversations going
  • Post consistently — a recognisable series beats random posting
  • Collaborate — collab posts and creator partnerships reach new, relevant audiences
  • Use stories for conversation — polls, quizzes and question stickers
  • Review Insights monthly — double down on formats with high saves and shares

Engagement rate and paid campaigns

Organic engagement is a useful signal for paid media: posts with unusually high saves and shares often become the best-performing ads, and creator content with strong engagement tends to work well as partnership ads. But engagement isn't the goal in itself — for ads, judge cost per result and new-customer acquisition. See Instagram ads.

Reels vs posts vs carousels

Engagement differs by format. Reels often reach more non-followers, so engagement rate by reach can look different from engagement by followers. Carousels tend to earn saves, and single images often earn likes. Compare like with like, and track the format mix when benchmarking an account over time.

How brands use engagement rate to choose creators

  • Check engagement rate against creators of a similar size
  • Read comments for genuine conversation rather than emojis and spam
  • Check audience location and age
  • Look for consistency across recent posts
  • Review past sponsored posts and how they performed

Frequently asked questions

What is the engagement rate formula for Instagram?

The most common formula is (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100. For your own account, engagement ÷ reach × 100 is more accurate.

Is 3% a good engagement rate on Instagram?

For a creator, 3% is usually considered excellent. For a brand account, it's far above the typical median of around 0.36% reported by Rival IQ for 2025.

Why is my Instagram engagement rate dropping?

Common reasons include follower growth from less relevant audiences, fewer people seeing each post, repetitive content, fewer Reels, or a drop in posting consistency. Compare engagement by reach as well — if reach fell but engagement by reach held, it's a distribution issue, not a content issue.

Should saves and shares be included in engagement rate?

If you can see them (in your own Insights or from a creator's screenshots), yes — they're strong value signals. For public profiles, most tools can only count likes and comments, so compare like with like.

How many posts should I use to calculate engagement rate?

The last 9–12 feed posts or Reels is a common, fair sample. Exclude giveaways and unusually boosted posts, which distort the average.

What is a good engagement rate for an influencer in India?

Use the same tier logic: smaller creators usually show higher rates. Beyond the rate, check audience location and language, comment quality and past brand-collaboration performance. Paid collaborations must be disclosed under ASCI guidelines.

Does engagement rate affect Instagram reach?

Instagram's ranking uses signals such as how likely people are to interact with, share or save a post. Content that earns those interactions tends to be shown to more people, especially in Reels and Explore.

Should brands judge creators by followers or engagement?

Engagement quality and audience fit matter more than follower count.

Can engagement rate be faked?

Yes — through engagement pods and bought likes. Look for unnatural patterns and low-quality comments.

Does the calculator store our data?

No — calculations run in your browser.
