Engagement rate
The short answer
Engagement rate measures how many people interact with content relative to how many saw it (or how many follow the account). Interactions typically include likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks.
The formula matters: engagement by reach tells you how compelling a post was to those who saw it; engagement by followers is easier to compare across accounts but can be distorted by inactive followers.
Not all engagement is equal
- Saves — strong signal of lasting value
- Shares and sends — strong signal of relevance; drive new reach
- Comments — conversation, sometimes purchase intent
- Likes — the weakest signal
- Clicks — the closest link to business outcomes
For influencer selection
Engagement rate helps spot inflated followings, but also check comment quality. Emoji-only comments and generic praise can indicate engagement pods.
Common engagement rate formulas
| Formula | Use |
|---|---|
| Engagements ÷ reach × 100 | Content performance |
| Engagements ÷ impressions × 100 | Paid and organic post comparison |
| Engagements ÷ followers × 100 | Influencer comparison |

Frequently asked questions
What's a good engagement rate?
It varies by platform, account size and industry. Compare against your own history and similar accounts.
Why is our engagement rate falling as we grow?
Larger audiences often engage at lower rates. Focus on saves, shares and enquiries.
Why do large accounts have lower engagement rates?
Larger audiences are broader, so a smaller share engages with each post.
Can engagement be faked?
Yes — engagement pods and bought interactions inflate numbers. Check comment quality and audience data.
Engagement by followers or by reach?
Both are useful — by reach shows how engaging content was for those who saw it.
Why is engagement lower on large accounts?
Larger audiences are less tightly connected to the creator, so engagement rate usually falls as follower count rises.
