Cart abandonment
The short answer
Cart abandonment is when a shopper adds products to their cart but leaves without completing the purchase. The cart abandonment rate is the share of carts that don't become orders.
High abandonment is normal — many people use carts to compare or save items — but a large part is caused by fixable friction.
Why Indian shoppers abandon
- Unexpected costs — shipping or COD fees shown late
- Payment failures — UPI timeouts and card declines
- No COD option for first-time buyers
- Forced account creation
- Slow or confusing mobile checkout
- Delivery dates too far out
Recovery
- Fix the friction in checkout first.
- Send a WhatsApp reminder within an hour for opted-in shoppers.
- Follow with email for those who haven't returned.
- Retarget on Meta and Google with the specific product.
- Use offers sparingly, so customers don't learn to wait for a discount.
Cart abandonment rate formula
Cart abandonment rate = 1 − (completed purchases ÷ carts created). If 1,000 carts are created and 300 purchases are completed, the abandonment rate is 70%. Track it by device and traffic source to find where checkout friction is worst. See checkout optimisation.
Cart abandonment in practice
A store sees 1,000 carts created and 300 orders: cart abandonment is 70%. Showing delivery costs earlier, adding UPI and sending WhatsApp reminders recovers some of those carts.
How to reduce cart abandonment
- Show total costs early
- Offer preferred payment methods
- Simplify checkout
- Send reminder messages with consent
Cart abandonment in India
Common Indian triggers include surprise delivery charges, missing COD or UPI options, OTP failures and slow pages on mobile networks. WhatsApp reminders often recover more carts than email.
Common mistakes
- Showing delivery charges only at the final step
- Reminders without consent
- Discounting every abandoned cart by default
Frequently asked questions
What's a normal cart abandonment rate?
Most eCommerce sites see a majority of carts abandoned. Track your own rate by device and payment method to find specific problems.
Is WhatsApp better than email for cart recovery?
In India, WhatsApp typically has much higher read rates, but costs per message and requires opt-in. Use both.
When should abandoned cart messages be sent?
The first reminder usually within an hour, with one or two follow-ups over the next day or two — tested for your audience.
Should cart recovery include discounts?
Not always. Reminders, reassurance and answers to objections often work without discounts; reserve offers for later messages.
What causes cart abandonment?
Unexpected costs, complicated checkout, missing payment options and simple distraction.
Do abandoned-cart messages work?
Yes — email and WhatsApp reminders often recover a meaningful share of carts.
How soon should a cart reminder be sent?
Often within an hour, with a second reminder later — test timing for your audience.
