Conversion rate

The short answer

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors or clicks that complete a desired action — a purchase, a lead form, a sign-up. 180 orders from 10,000 sessions is a 1.8% conversion rate.

It's one of the most powerful levers in marketing because it multiplies everything: double your conversion rate and you halve your cost per acquisition on every channel, without spending more.

What lowers conversion rate in India

  • Slow mobile pages on mid-range phones and variable networks
  • Hidden costs — shipping or COD fees revealed at checkout
  • Missing trust signals — reviews, return policy, contact details
  • Payment failures — UPI timeouts and declined cards
  • Forced account creation
  • Mismatch between ad and landing page — see message match

Measure the right denominator

Session-based conversion rate, user-based conversion rate and click-based conversion rate give different numbers. Pick one, define it and use it consistently.

Conversion rate formula and example

If a landing page receives 4,000 sessions and produces 120 qualified leads, the conversion rate is 120 ÷ 4,000 = 3%. If spend was ₹1,20,000, cost per qualified lead is ₹1,000; lifting conversion to 4% at the same spend cuts it to ₹750. See CRO services.

Conversion rate in practice

A landing page gets 5,000 visits and 150 enquiries: conversion rate is 3%. Doubling it to 6% halves the cost per enquiry without changing ad spend.

How to improve conversion rate

  • Match the page to the ad's promise
  • Speed up the page
  • Simplify forms
  • Add trust signals

Conversion rates in India

Mobile-first audiences, varied network speeds and payment preferences make page speed, UPI and COD options and trust signals especially important for Indian conversion rates.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing conversion rates across very different traffic sources
  • Ignoring mobile speed
  • Optimising for clicks rather than conversions

Frequently asked questions

What's a good eCommerce conversion rate?

It varies by category, price point and traffic source. Compare against your own history and by traffic source rather than industry averages.

How do I improve conversion rate?

Research where and why people drop off, fix obvious friction, then test changes. See CRO.

Why is mobile conversion rate lower than desktop?

Slower pages, small screens, form friction and more browsing behaviour. Mobile-specific fixes usually close part of the gap.

Should we track micro-conversions?

Yes — add-to-cart, form starts and WhatsApp clicks help diagnose the funnel, but optimise campaigns toward real outcomes.

What's a good conversion rate?

It varies widely by industry, traffic source and offer; benchmark against your own history.

Is conversion rate the same across devices?

Usually not — mobile often converts lower, which is why mobile experience matters.

Should conversion rate be measured per session or per user?

Both are used; be consistent and clear about which.
