CPV (Cost Per View)
The short answer
CPV (Cost Per View) is the average amount you pay for one counted view of a video ad. On YouTube skippable in-stream ads, a paid view is typically counted when someone watches 30 seconds (or the whole ad if it's shorter) or interacts with it.
Because skippers who leave before that point often cost nothing, a strong hook effectively filters your audience for free — people who aren't interested skip, and you pay mainly for those who stayed.
What CPV tells you — and doesn't
CPV measures the price of attention, not its value. A cheap view from someone outside your market is worthless. Pair CPV with view rate, average watch time and downstream signals like branded search lift and site visits.
Lowering CPV
- Put the most compelling moment in the first five seconds
- Target by intent and custom segments rather than broad demographics
- Test multiple hooks against the same body
- Use regional language versions where your audience watches in them
When CPV bidding fits
| Goal | Suitable? |
|---|---|
| Consideration with longer videos | Yes |
| Building remarketing pools | Yes |
| Direct conversions | Usually better with conversion bidding |
| Brand reach | CPM bidding often more efficient |

CPV in practice
A YouTube campaign spends ₹20,000 for 50,000 views: CPV is ₹0.40. Views are useful for reach and consideration, but should be judged alongside brand lift and downstream conversions.
How to improve CPV
- Strong hooks in the first seconds
- Relevant audiences
- Formats suited to the placement
Common CPV mistakes
- Optimising for cheap views with weak creative
- Ignoring view-through and search lift
- Running long ads without a strong hook
