Brand strategy: positioning you can write ads from
The short answer
If you can't say why someone should choose you in one sentence, no ad will say it for you. Brand strategy is the work of finding that sentence — grounded in what customers genuinely value, what competitors actually claim, and what you can credibly prove.
PMG does positioning with a performance marketer's bias: the output must be usable. A positioning statement that can't be turned into a headline, a hook and a landing page isn't finished.
The four questions positioning answers
- For whom? — the specific buyer who values you most, not "everyone aged 25–45"
- Against what? — the alternative they'd otherwise choose, including doing nothing
- Why you? — the difference that matters to them, not to you
- Why believe it? — the proof: data, reviews, credentials, guarantees, demonstrations
How we develop it
- Customer research — interviews and review mining for the language buyers actually use.
- Competitive map — what everyone else claims, and where the empty space is.
- Proof inventory — what you can genuinely back up with evidence.
- Positioning statement — who it's for, what it does, how it's different, why believe it.
- Messaging hierarchy — primary promise, supporting points, objection answers, tone.
- Market test — two or three positioning angles run as ad concepts to see which one actually resonates.

- Every campaign says something different
- You compete mainly on price
- New products don't fit the current brand
- Teams disagree on who the customer is
Brand strategy by situation
| Situation | Key question |
|---|---|
| New brand | Who exactly are we for, and why us? |
| Crowded category | What can we own that competitors can't? |
| New market | Does our positioning travel? |
| After a merger or pivot | What do we stand for now? |
A worked example
A D2C supplement brand described itself in the same terms as every competitor. Customer interviews revealed buyers valued transparent sourcing above all. The new positioning led with traceability, which shaped packaging, ads and the website — and gave the brand a distinctive story.
Before brand strategy
- Customer interviews scheduled
- Sales data shared
- Competitor list
- Stakeholder workshop booked
How a Brand Strategy engagement with PMG runs
- Audit (week 0–1). Accounts, analytics, tracking, website, CRM flow and competitors reviewed, with a written list of what's broken, what's wasted and the three moves we'd make first.
- Plan (week 1–2). Break-even ROAS or a target cost per lead, a measurement plan and a 90-day roadmap for Brand Strategy, with owners and dates.
- Launch (week 2–4). Clean structures, verified conversion signals, the first creative sprint and landing-page fixes.
- Optimise (months 2–3). A weekly test cadence, with budget following the cheapest incremental results rather than platform-reported ones.
- Scale (month 3 onwards). New channels, geographies and retention loops, added only when the economics hold.
Every week you get a one-page scorecard, a change log, the test board and a 30-minute call with your strategist. See how we work and pricing for details.
Why teams choose PMG for Brand Strategy
- Measurement first. Unit economics and clean tracking come before any increase in spend.
- You own everything. Ad accounts, data and creative stay in your name; ad spend goes straight to the platforms.
- Senior hands on the account. The strategist you speak to is the person running it.
- Weekly transparency. Scorecard, change log and test board — every week.
- Short minimum terms. We keep clients with results, not contracts.
- India and international. One Mumbai team running campaigns across Indian cities and overseas markets, Mon–Sat, 7am–9pm IST.

Frequently asked questions
How is brand strategy different from marketing strategy?
Brand strategy defines what you stand for and how you're different. Marketing strategy decides how you reach and convert people. The first should shape the second.
Do we need this if we're already selling well?
If sales depend heavily on discounts, or CAC keeps rising, sharper positioning is often the cheapest fix available.
How long does it take?
Four to six weeks, including research and a short market test.
How long does a brand strategy project take?
Typically four to eight weeks, depending on research depth and stakeholders.
Does brand strategy matter for performance marketing?
Yes — clear positioning improves ad messaging, landing-page conversion and pricing power.
Can small businesses afford brand strategy?
A lighter version — customer interviews, competitor review and a positioning workshop — is affordable and often transformative.
What is brand positioning?
The specific place a brand aims to occupy in customers' minds relative to alternatives.
How do you research a brand strategy?
Through customer interviews, competitor analysis, sales data and stakeholder workshops.
How is brand strategy different from branding?
Strategy defines positioning and messaging; branding expresses it visually and verbally.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
