Packaging designed for the shelf and the screen
The short answer
Packaging now has to work in three places at once: a physical shelf, a 100-pixel thumbnail on a marketplace or quick-commerce app, and a creator's unboxing video. Designs built only for the shelf often become unreadable at thumbnail size — and in quick commerce, the thumbnail is the shelf.
PMG designs packaging as a marketing asset: recognisable at a glance on a phone, differentiated across variants, compliant, and worth filming when it arrives.
What we consider
- Recognisable at thumbnail size on a mid-range phone screen
- Clear product and variant differentiation — flavour, shade, size
- Mandatory labelling and declaration requirements for your category
- An unboxing moment people want to share
- Protection in transit — damaged deliveries become returns and bad reviews
- Sustainable, cost-efficient materials
- Pack sizes suited to quick commerce, trial and gifting
The unboxing opportunity
- Inserts that thank the customer and explain how to use the product
- QR codes to reorder, register a warranty or join WhatsApp updates
- Review prompts at the moment of highest satisfaction
- Shareable design that creators and customers want to film
- Referral offers for the next purchase
How we work
- Audit the shelf and the screen — how competitors look on Amazon, Blinkit and in-store.
- Define the hierarchy — brand, product, variant, key claim.
- Concept routes — two or three distinct directions.
- Mock-ups tested at thumbnail size and on physical samples.
- Artwork prepared for print, with regulatory information placed correctly.
What packaging design considers
- Shelf and screen visibility — thumbnail readability
- Brand recognition — colours, typography, distinctive assets
- Information hierarchy — product name, benefit, variant, size
- Regulatory labelling — Legal Metrology declarations, FSSAI for food, other category rules
- Materials and sustainability
- Print production and costs
- Unboxing experience

A worked example
A snack brand's packs looked great on shelves but were unreadable as marketplace thumbnails. We redesigned the front panel with bigger product imagery and clearer flavour names, creating separate hero images for online listings. Click-through on marketplaces improved.
Before packaging design
- Regulatory label requirements
- Sales channels (retail, online, quick commerce)
- Printing constraints and budget
- Competitor shelf review

- Tracking check
- Pixels, Conversions API, GA4 events and offline conversions — what is firing, what is double-counted, what is missing.
- Wasted spend
- Search terms, placements, audiences and overlap that cost money without producing qualified leads or sales.
- Conversion path
- Landing page speed, message match, form friction and follow-up time — where interested people drop off.
- 90-day priorities
- The three changes we would make first, with the metric each one should move.
Frequently asked questions
Do you handle regulatory labelling?
We design around it and flag the requirements we're aware of, but final compliance review should involve your regulatory adviser.
Can packaging really affect online sales?
Yes — the main marketplace image is usually the packaging. Clearer packaging raises click-through and conversion.
Do you manage printing?
We prepare print-ready artwork and can coordinate with your printer; we don't operate print facilities ourselves.
How long does packaging design take?
Typically six to ten weeks from brief to print-ready artwork, depending on variants and approvals.
Does packaging affect online sales?
Yes — packaging appears in product images and influences clicks and perceived quality.
Do you handle printing?
We prepare print-ready files and coordinate with your printers.
Is there a long contract?
No. Minimum terms are short, because we would rather keep clients with results than with contracts.
Will we own the ad accounts and data?
Yes. Everything runs in your own accounts with partner access for PMG, and you can see it all at any time.
What do you need from us to start?
Access to ad accounts and analytics, your margins and order values (or deal values), brand assets, and a decision-maker available for a weekly 30-minute call.
